Carlos was one of the many students The Pucusana Project sponsored to attend Pierre Laplace High School, our partner ministry in Pucusana. Like so many children in Pucusana, Carlos comes from a family living below the poverty line. On top of that, he struggled with a speak impediment.
I remember when the principle of Pierre Laplace first asked me about a sponsorship for Carlos. She told me that Carlos’s mother was worried about Carlos attending a different school because of how he would be treated due to his stutter. Unlike many schools in Pucusana, Pierre Laplace enforces specific values on their students and has a strict anti-bullying policy. Understanding the situation, I was more than happy to start sponsoring him a few years ago.
Each sponsor student has to apply and go through multiple interviews with the principle of Pierre Laplace. In order to qualify for the sponsorship, they have to have financial need, good moral conduct and an acceptable GPA. Pending an available sponsor and applicant approval, the student must also maintain a specific grade average and follow all the rules of conduct. If they get into big trouble or fail a class, their sponsorship will be given to a different child in need.
Even though Carlos struggled in school before, he was held to the same standard as all the other sponsor students. I was recently able to ask Carlos questions regarding his time at Pierre Laplace and he told me that in the beginning, he was nervous because of how academically difficult Pierre Laplace was known to be. But at the same time, he was happy to study there and improve himself, especially in math.
I asked Carlos what benefited him the most during his time at Pierre Laplace and he said, “Well, I am one of the people who thinks a lot. I was shy and would get really nervous having to speak. But this school offered me friendship. I became friends with Kendrick, Arian, Elio and Flavia and they helped me overcome my fear of speaking.”
Over the past few years, I personally have been able to watch Carlos interact with his classmates and how they treated him. Due to his stutter, Carlos would be overwhelmed with nerves when having to do projects that required him to speak in front of the class. He was the most nervous when having to speak in English. But his classmates would openly encourage him during his presentations to the Teacher. When he stumbled over words, students would say things like “it’s okay, keep trying Carlos” and they’d congratulate him with a job well done when he was finished.
While much of Carlos’s success is rightfully given to the incredible teachers and classes offered to him, I cannot emphasize enough how the atmosphere of the school, the encouragement of the teachers and students and the “we stick up for each other” culture at this school is what truly helped Carlos the most.
He also mentioned that the school helped him learn the importance of reading and writing, “I learned to write and expose emotions through words and because of that, I learned how to write lyrics”.
When asked how the sponsorship program helped Carlos’s family he said, “It helped us financially of course but it also offered us the opportunity to move forward with support”. Carlos would not have been able to attend Pierre Laplace without a sponsor. But in addition to paying for his education, the sponsorship program gave his family the financial flexibility to move forward in any small way they could. Carlos, being the oldest of his siblings, also set the example for how to overcome diversity and persevere despite the circumstances they were born into.
I asked Carlos what his favorite part of the sponsorship program was and he said,“Getting to meet my sponsors. This was a great contribution to my life that I will always be thankful for”. And I can honestly say getting to meet my sponsor kids is always my favorite part too. These students have changed my life in ways they will never know.
Being a sponsor for a child to attend a school offering a quality education is one of the most impactful and treasured gifts a person can give to another. These students become a part of your life, a part of your family. Even if you never meet them in person, you’ll become friends and share in their success through letters and photos on Facebook. Student sponsorships are not just about giving money away to the underprivileged; at The Pucusana Project, they are about creating a life long two-way relationship rooted in mutual respect and love.
Carlos and the other 3 sponsor students in his grade graduated this past December along with all their classmates. Because of the outstanding education made available to Carlos through the Sponsorship program, Carlos was recently accepted into an undergraduate Software Engineering program. He will learn how to create and maintain android programs and how to improve virtual reality technology devices.
I, along with all those at The Pucusana Project, cannot express how proud we are of Carlos for his success. And we know God has great things planned for his future.

En Español: Conoce a Carlos
Carlos fue uno de los muchos estudiantes que patrocinó el Proyecto Pucusana para asistir a Pierre Laplace High School, nuestro ministerio asociado en Pucusana. Como tantos otros niños en Pucusana, Carlos proviene de una familia que vive por debajo del umbral de la pobreza. Además de eso, luchó con un impedimento de hablar.
Recuerdo cuando el principio de Pierre Laplace me preguntó por primera vez acerca de un patrocinio para Carlos. Ella me dijo que a la madre de Carlos le preocupaba que Carlos asistiera a una escuela diferente debido a la forma en que lo tratarían debido a su tartamudeo. A diferencia de muchas escuelas en Pucusana, Pierre Laplace aplica valores específicos a sus estudiantes y tiene una política estricta contra el acoso escolar. Comprendiendo la situación, me alegré mucho de comenzar a patrocinarlo hace unos años.
Cada estudiante patrocinador debe solicitar y pasar por múltiples entrevistas con el principio de Pierre Laplace. Para calificar para el patrocinio, deben tener una necesidad financiera, una buena conducta moral y un GPA aceptable. En espera de la aprobación de un patrocinador y solicitante disponible, el estudiante también debe mantener un promedio de calificaciones específico y seguir todas las reglas de conducta. Si se meten en grandes problemas o fallan en una clase, su patrocinio se otorgará a un niño necesitado diferente.
A pesar de que Carlos tuvo dificultades en la escuela antes, se mantuvo al mismo nivel que todos los demás estudiantes patrocinadores. Recientemente pude hacerle preguntas a Carlos sobre su tiempo en Pierre Laplace y él me dijo que al principio estaba nervioso por lo difícil que era académicamente que era Pierre Laplace. Pero al mismo tiempo, estaba feliz de estudiar allí y mejorar a sí mismo, especialmente en matemáticas.

En los últimos años, personalmente he podido ver a Carlos interactuar con sus compañeros y cómo lo trataron. Debido a su tartamudeo, Carlos se sentiría abrumado por los nervios al tener que hacer proyectos que le exigieran hablar frente a la clase. Era el más nervioso al tener que hablar en inglés. Pero sus compañeros de clase lo animarían abiertamente durante sus presentaciones al Maestro. Cuando se tropezó con las palabras, los estudiantes decían cosas como "está bien, sigue intentando con Carlos" y lo felicitan por un trabajo bien hecho cuando terminó.
Si bien gran parte del éxito de Carlos se le da a los maestros increíbles y las clases que se le ofrecen, no puedo enfatizar lo suficiente el ambiente de la escuela, el aliento de los maestros y los estudiantes y la cultura de "nos apoyamos mutuamente" en esta escuela. Es lo que realmente ayudó a Carlos más.
También mencionó que la escuela lo ayudó a aprender la importancia de leer y escribir, "Aprendí a escribir y exponer emociones a través de las palabras y, por eso, aprendí a escribir letras".
Cuando se le preguntó cómo ayudó el programa de patrocinio a la familia de Carlos, dijo: "Por supuesto, nos ayudó financieramente, pero también nos ofreció la oportunidad de seguir adelante con apoyo". Carlos no hubiera podido asistir a Pierre Laplace sin un patrocinador. Pero además de pagar por su educación, el programa de patrocinio le dio a su familia la flexibilidad financiera para avanzar de la manera más pequeña posible. Carlos, siendo el mayor de sus hermanos, también dio el ejemplo de cómo superar la diversidad y perseverar a pesar de las circunstancias en las que nacieron.
Le pregunté a Carlos cuál era su parte favorita del programa de apadrinamiento y él me dijo: "Conocer a mis patrocinadores". Esta fue una gran contribución a mi vida por la cual siempre estaré agradecido ”. Y puedo decir honestamente que conocer a mis hijos patrocinadores siempre es mi parte favorita también. Estos estudiantes han cambiado mi vida de una manera que nunca sabrán.
Ser un patrocinador para que un niño asista a una escuela que ofrece una educación de calidad es uno de los regalos más importantes y atesorados que una persona puede dar a otra. Estos estudiantes se convierten en parte de su vida, en parte de su familia. Incluso si nunca los conoces en persona, te convertirás en amigo y compartirás su éxito a través de cartas y fotos en Facebook. Los patrocinios de los estudiantes no son solo para regalar dinero a los menos privilegiados; en el Proyecto Pucusana, se trata de crear una relación bidireccional de por vida basada en el respeto y el amor mutuos.
Carlos y los otros 3 estudiantes patrocinadores en su grado se graduaron el pasado diciembre junto con todos sus compañeros. Debido a la excelente educación puesta a disposición de Carlos a través del programa de patrocinio, Carlos fue recientemente aceptado en un programa de licenciatura en ingeniería de software. Aprenderá cómo crear y mantener programas de Android y cómo mejorar los dispositivos de tecnología de realidad virtual.
Yo, junto con todos los del Proyecto Pucusana, no puedo expresar lo orgullosos que estamos de Carlos por su éxito. Y sabemos que Dios tiene grandes cosas planeadas para su futuro.
